The activity of immunoglobulin Y anti-Mycobacterium tuberculosis on proliferation and cytokine expression of rat peripheral blood mononuclear cells

Abstract: Objective:It has long been known that chickens, like mammals, are capable of producing antigen-specific immunoglobulin Y (IgY), which functions similar to IgG. The present study was performed to investigate the activity of IgY anti-Mycobacterium tuberculosis on proliferation, interleukin (IL)-2, and interferon (IFN)-γ expression of rat peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs).Materials and Methods:The activity of IgY anti-M. tuberculosis in different doses (25, 50, and 100 μg/ml) on rat PBMCs proliferation w… Show more

“…IgY against Mycobacterium tuberculosis increased the proliferation of PBMC (peripheral blood mononuclear cells) in rats in a dose-dependent manner. An increased expression of cytokines that stimulate the cellular immune response was observed and an increase of mRNA level of IL-2 and IFN-γ was detected by RT-PCR, which indicates that anti-M. tuberculosis IgY is a potential immunotherapeutic that stimulates T-helper 1 immune response [66].…”

“…MBTC is increasingly becoming more difficult to treat due to antibiotic resistance ( 122 ). In a rat peripheral blood mononuclear cell model, administration of high concentrations of IgY anti-MBTC increased interleukin-2 and interferon expression ( 123 ). IgY against MBTC may warrant evaluation for use in combination with other immunotherapeutic treatments of tuberculosis ( 124 ).…”

“…Similar to other immunoglobulins, IgY is a class of recognition proteins formed by the immune system in response to foreign substances. Sudjarwo et al found that IgY could significantly increase the proliferation of rat PBMCs and secretion of IL-2 and IFN-g in PBMCs, suggesting that the pharmacological activity of IgY against Mtb may be mediated by regulating the production of cytokines (Sudjarwo et al, 2017a).…”
