The action of phytochemicals present in cocoa in the prevention of vascular dysfunction and atherosclerosis

Abstract: Background: Chronic non-communicable diseases, including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), have caused many deaths worldwide. Atherosclerotic plaque formation is common in individuals with CVDs. Thus, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutritional strategies can be used to prevent or inhibit this process. Due to its higher concentrations of cocoa, dark chocolate is considered a functional food due to the presence and action of phytochemical compounds, with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. However, the r… Show more

“…Since food matrix can directly affect the disposition of chemical structures of nutraceuticals, the correlations observed are an indication that the interactions between compounds are good and that could present a potential effect as protective of diseases or sport supplement. Cocoa flavanols are well known for antioxidant activity (Indiarto et al, 2022), preventing vascular dysfunction and atherosclerosis (De Paula Silva et al, 2022) and brain cognition (Zeli et al, 2022) but also have an important antioxidant effect increasing total antioxidant capacity during sport performance or rest (Somerville et al, 2017). The mix of important antioxidant compounds as procyanidin B2, procyanidin B1 and phenolic acid even could generate a possible synergic effect with an important effect to be considered a potential help as sport performance and improve recovery (Sorrenti et al, 2020).…”

“…One such plant with high antioxidant properties is Theobroma cacao [17]. Theobroma cacao is reported to suppress the development of atherosclerotic lesions [18], decrease platelet hyperactivity [19], increase dermal blood flow [20], decrease oxidation of LDL cholesterol and promote normal lipid profile [21]. It also inhibits the proliferation of human breast cancer cells [22].…”
