“…Prolongation of sleeping time in pentobarbitoneinduced sleeping time test is may be because of enhancement in brain GABA as it is known to have depression action in brain as reported by Iwama et a1. 9 In locomotor activity testing, decrease in rearing along with locomotor activity is observed, that reveals depressive effect on CNS as reported by Leewanich et al l0 Overall we can say that PEE is having good CNS depressant activity.…”

“…Directly evoked cortical potentia18 Iwama & Jasper (1957) and Purpura et al (1959), who studied the effects of topically applied solutions of GABA on the response evoked in the cerebral cortex by stimulation of a nearby point, found that application of a 1 % GABA solution resulted in abolition of the surface negative response, leaving only a positive deflexion. Purpura et al have further reported that this property is possessed also by f-alanine, guanidinoacetic acid and BGPA, and that GGBA reduced the negative phase of the response and eliminated the appearance of the positive wave as well.…”

“…However, the mode of biogenesis remains still to be settled in detail. Although Grundfest (4) and Purpura et al (9,11,12) have regarded the DR as the summation of the two opposing excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials, their hypothesis has been bombarded relating to the effects of GABA on the DR (10,13,19). The biphasic effects of topically applied GHB on the DR, an aug mentation in the small dose and an inhibition in the large dose, may serve also for the clue to know the biogenesis of the potential.…”
