The Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome in the Wife of a Hemophiliac

Abstract: A 71-year-old previously healthy woman developed unexplained thrush, onychomycosis, Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, and a T-cell defect consistent with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Her only apparent risk factor was infrequent, monogamous sexual contact with her husband, a 74-year-old hemophiliac who had received factor VIII concentrate and subsequently died due to P. carinii pneumonia. She first developed probable signs of the syndrome (recurrent thrush and onychomycosis) 1 year before her husband b… Show more

“…[17] did not find any immunological alterations in the female sexual partners of their hemophilic patients. In 1984 the first reports on AIDS [28] and lymphadenopathy [30] in female sexual partners of hemophiliacs were published. After serological tests for HIV had become available, various groups investigated the seroprevalence of HIV in sexual partners of hemophiliacs [15], [18], [22], [2], [3], [14], [23], [6], [13], [24].…”

“…Both HIV infection [18] and AIDS [28] were documented in female sexual partners of hemophiliacs only shortly after the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. The aim of our study is to determine the rate of heterosexual HIV-transmission in our hemophilic patients, to determine the clinical course of those infected, and to define possible risk factors associated with the heterosexual transmission of HIV.…”

“…However, continued follow-up of this group is needed so that accurate counseling can be provided in the future; evidence for infection with HTLV-III via heterosexual transmission is now emerging. [28][29][30] Hemophilic patients given nonheated commercial factor VIII concentrates are at high risk for development of antibody to HTLV-III and associated immunologic abnormalities. Patients given cryoprecipitate prepared from the plasma of Southeastern Wisconsin blood donors appear to be at lower risk.…”

“…Sexual partners of some hemophilic patients have developed AIDS or ARC, or have seroconverted to HTLV-III/LAV [4-61. 4. At least one case of neonatal AIDS has been reported in a child of a hemophilic patient who subsequently developed AIDS himself [7].…”
