Considerations of materiality and object-oriented approaches have greatly influenced the development of archaeological theory in recent years. Yet, Palaeolithic archaeology has been slow in incorporating this emerging body of scholarship and exploring its bearing on the human deep past. This paper probes into the potential of materiality theory to clarify the material dynamics of the Plio-Pleistocene and seeks to re-articulate the debate on the evolution of our species with materiality discourses in archaeology and the humanities more broadly. We argue that the signature temporalities and geospatial scales of observation provided by the Palaeolithic record offer unique opportunities to examine the active role of material things, objects, artefacts and technologies in the emergence, stabilisation and transformation of hominin lifeworlds and the accretion of long-term trajectories of material culture change. We map three axes of human-thing relations-ecological, technical and evolutionary-and deploy a range of case studies from the literature to show that a critical re-assessment of material agency not only discloses novel insights and questions, but can also refine what we already know about the human deep past. Our exploration underscores the benefits of de-centring human behaviour and intentionality and demonstrates that materiality lends itself as a productive nexus of exchange and mutual inspiration for diverging schools and research interests in Palaeolithic archaeology. An integrated object-oriented perspective calls attention to the human condition as a product of millennial-scale humanthing co-adaptation, in the course of which hominins, artefacts and technologies continuously influenced and co-created each other.

The presence of Homo floresiensis and Homo luzonensis in southeast Asia 90,000 to 60,000 years ago is considered surprising by many, and has been used to support their designation as unique species and the islands they were discovered on as refugia. Here, we statistically test the null hypothesis that H. floresiensis and H. luzonensis represent temporally uninterrupted occurrences relative to Homo erectus. We do this using the 'surprise test' for the exceptionality of a new record. Results demonstrate that H. floresiensis and H. luzonensis are not temporally distinct relative to H. erectus. Their late persistence should, therefore, not be considered surprising, they cannot reliably be inferred to be outside of H. erectus' temporal range, andtemporallythe islands of Luzon and Flores are not supported as refugia. Similarly, late H. erectus at Ngandong, Java, is not demonstrated to be temporally distinct relative to earlier, principally mainland-Asian, H. erectus. Further, we demonstrate that substantial numbers of fossil discoveries would be needed before H. floresiensis and H. luzonensis are outside of H. erectus' expected temporal range. If H. floresiensis and H. luzonensis are descended from H. erectus populations, our results point toward either geographic processes of allopatric speciation or behavioural processes leading to a sympatric speciation event.

Resumo:A estação paleolítica do Cabeço da Mina (Muge, Portugal) é uma jazida histórica da Arqueologia Portuguesa. Descoberta em 1939, foi aí que se realizaram as primeiras escavações nacionais numa estação de ar livre do Paleolítico Inferior, tendo desempenhado um papel relevante na discussão em torno da atribuição crono-cultural dos achados pré-históricos conhecidos à época na região de Muge. Para além dos materiais acheulenses exumados em estratigrafia (que nunca foram extensivamente caracterizados), depositados no Museu de História Natural e da Ciência da Universidade do Porto, há uma coleção de artefactos líticos provenientes do Cabeço da Mina integrada no acervo do Museu Geológico, resultante de recolhas efetuadas por Henri Breuil e Georges Zbyszewski aquando da sua visita à jazida. No presente trabalho, reportam-se os dados do estudo tecno-tipológico dos respetivos Large Cutting Tools – 41 artefactos, distribuídos entre machados de mão, bifaces, picos triédricos e outros macro-utensílios. Globalmente, são produtos definidos através de sequências operatórias expeditas, o que se considera ser indissociável de uma seleção atenta do suporte, do aproveitamento judicioso das suas características intrínsecas e do grau de conceptualização que se lhes encontra subjacente.Palavras-chave: Baixo Tejo, Acheulense, Large Cutting Tools (LCTs), Cadeia operatória, Suporte, Conceptualização. Abstract: Cabeço da Mina (Muge, Portugal) is a historical site of Portuguese archaeology. Discovered in 1939, it was there that the first excavations of an open-air Lower Palaeolithic site took place, playing an important role in the discussion regarding the chrono-cultural assignment of the prehistoric finds known at that time in Muge. In addition to the Acheulean artefacts exhumed in stratigraphy (that have never been extensively published), which are stored in the Natural History and Science Museum of the University of Porto, there is another assemblage from Cabeço da Mina in the Geological Museum. The latter resulted from collections made by Henri Breuil and Georges Zbyszewski when they visited the site, with this paper reporting the data from the techno-typological study of its Large Cutting Tools – 41 pieces, distributed between cleavers on flake, handaxes, trihedral picks and other macro-tools. Overall, these artefacts were defined through expeditious operational sequences, which is considered to be linked to the careful selection of the blank, the judicious exploitation of its intrinsic features, and the degree of conceptualisation that underlies their production.Keywords: Lower Tagus, Acheulean, Large Cutting Tools (LCTs), Chaîne opératoire, Blank, Conceptualisation.
