The accuracy of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) equations for producing predicted values of heart rate reserve (HRR) and oxygen uptake reserve (VO2R) and consequently, target energy expenditure (EE) during exercise are yet to be established. This study investigated whether speeds defined by the ACSM metabolic equation for running correctly estimate the EEs during isocaloric exercise bouts. Twenty-eight men performed a ramp-incremental maximal exercise test to determine HRmax and VO2max. Two continuous exercise bouts at 60 and 80% VO2R and target EE of 400 kcal were then performed. In the 60% VO2R exercise the observed VO2R and EE were lower than predicted only during the first time quartile of the bout (t = 6.5, p < 0.001), whereas at 80% VO2R it was lower during the first (t = 15.3, p < 0.001), second (t = 5.4, p < 0.001) and third (t = 3.1, p = 0.025) quartiles. The observed HR was lower than predicted in the first time quartile of the 60% [Formula: see text] (t = 5.6, p < 0.001) and 80% VO2R bouts (t = 10.7, p < 0.001), whereas no significant differences occurred for any other time quartiles (p ≥ 0.23). In conclusion, the running speed defined by the ACSM metabolic equation overestimated VO2R and EE within exercise performed at 60 and 80% VO2R especially in higher intensities.

The purpose of this study was to ascertain if gender and selected physiologic and anthropometric factors could account for variations in the oxygen cost of cycle ergometry. Forty women and 25 men volunteered as subjects. Subjects performed a three stage cycle ergometry test at power outputs of 0,360, and 540 kgm·min -1 respectively while their oxygen consumption was measured. The subjects also had several anthropometric, body composition, and knee muscle force measures made. Results indicated that most of the variables were significantly related to cycling VO2 (p .05). Fat-free mass (FFM) and fat-free thigh mass (FFTM) correlated the highest and identically with VO2 (r = .80, .67, and .57) at each respective power output listed above. Using stepwise multiple regression only one variable, FFTM, was associated with the equation for each power output. Because FFM correlated identically with VO2, the resulting equations were statistically equivalent in terms of r 2 (.64, .45, and .35, respectively) and SEE (70, 110, and 130 ml, respectively). Finally, it appears that FFTM and FFM are the best predictors of cycling VO2 while gender is not a distinguishing variable.

Validation of an equation for predicting energy cost of arm ergometry in women

Few studies have examined the validity of metabolic equations for the prediction of energy cost (VO(2)) of arm ergometry in women. Therefore, the purpose of this study was (a) to compare directly measured and predicted VO(2) values using the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) equation and (b) to develop and validate a prediction equation for women. A sample of 60 female subjects with mean (+/-SD) age, weight and height 26.5 +/- 14.4 years, 61.5 +/- 7.6 kg, 163.3 +/- 6.0 cm, respectively, was randomly assigned to an equation group (N = 40) and a cross validation group (N = 20). All subjects performed an incremental arm ergometry test (10 W increases every 2 min), until termination criteria were met. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated significant differences between the measured VO(2) and ACSM predicted VO(2) during all the incremental test work rate. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to develop the following upper body exercise VO(2) prediction equation: VO(2)(ml . kg(-1) . min(-1) = 23.461 - (0.272 x Body Weight) + (0.403 x watts) [R(2) = 0.82, SEE = 2.79] Cross validation indicated lower variability using the current prediction equation. An additional independent sample of 13 subjects performed a 30-min steady-state test at 40% of their pre-determined maximal work rate. VO(2) measured during the 30 min steady-state test (was significantly different P < 0.05) from the ACSM prediction at all time intervals. There were no significant differences using the above equation following the 5 min time interval. Therefore, a new equation is proposed as a means of providing a gender-specific energy cost prediction equation.
