The Accuracy of Glucose Monitoring by Diabetic Individuals in Their Home Setting

Abstract: This study evaluated the accuracy of patient self- monitoring of blood glucose. Determinations were performed at home with simultaneous collec tions of whole blood into capillary tubes. Specimens were mailed to the laboratory where they were analyzed by a glucose-oxidase analyzer. A significant correlation was observed between pa tient determined and laboratory determined glucose values. However, patient-determined values differed from the laboratory values by >+20% in 53.8% of the samples. Inaccuracies wer… Show more

“…Finally, the accuracy and reliability of the capillary blood glucose readings in these older subjects were excellent, in comparison with many similar methods, and were almost identical to those achieved in their younger counterparts. This may be attributed to the mental and physical abilities of the subjects and the simplification of the technique used that advances in technology, especially in the testing devices, have made possible 3–7 . Therefore, older people with adequate mental and physical faculties must be encouraged and trained in self‐management techniques, including capillary blood glucose testing to improve glycemic control and prevent or delay the onset of complications, resulting in lowering of the long‐term costs attributed to this disorder.…”

“…The prognostic implications of presenting disease manifestations vary as a function of age; saddle-nose deformity and systemic vasculitis predict the highest risk of death in patients younger than 51 and anemia in older patients. 6 Corticosteroids and methotrexate represent the most effective therapy, whereas dapsone and other immunosuppressive agents (azathioprine, cyclophosphamide, cyclosporine) qualify as second-line therapeutical options. 2 A 79-year-old man was referred to our attention because he had been complaining during the previous 3 months of fever (38.9 Њ C) associated with pain, edema, and redness of the nose.…”
