The absence of CD56 expression can differentiate papillary thyroid carcinoma from other thyroid lesions

Abstract: CD56 has been proved to be a useful marker in the diagnosis of PTC, including FV-PTC. Its absence can help differentiate FV-PTC from other thyroid nodules with follicular patterns.

“…11 Several studies were conducted in which CD56 immunohistochemistry has differentiated PTC from benign thyroid lesions like FA, NH, and HT, the differences being statistically significant (p= < 0.0001). 22 Similar results were also obtained in our study (p=< 0.0001). No statistical significance was observed by comparing CD56 expression of NH and HT with FA.…”

“…HBME-1 displayed high sensitivity and high specificity in detecting PTC in many cases [ 34 ]. Additional reports suggest that mixed panels of immunostaining markers would provide more accurate diagnoses [ 12 - 16 , 20 , 22 , 25 , 26 , 33 , 36 ].…”
