We present new spectroscopic observations obtained with GMOS@Gemini-S of a sample of 25 H ii regions located in NGC 55, a late-type galaxy in the nearby Sculptor group. We derive physical conditions and chemical composition through the T e -method for 18 H ii regions, and strong-line abundances for 22 H ii regions. We provide abundances of He, O, N, Ne, S, Ar, finding a substantially homogenous composition in the ionised gas of the disc of NGC 55, with no trace of radial gradients. The oxygen abundances, both derived with T e -and strong-line methods, have similar mean values and similarly small dispersions: 12+log(O/H)=8.13±0.18 dex with the former and 12+log(O/H)=8.17±0.13 dex with the latter. The average metallicities and the flat gradients agree with previous studies of smaller samples of H ii regions and there is a qualitative agreement with the blue supergiant radial gradient as well. We investigate the origin of such flat gradients comparing NGC 55 with NGC 300, its companion galaxy, which is also twin of NGC 55 in terms of mass and luminosity. We suggest that the differences in the metal distributions in the two galaxies might be related to the differences in their K-band surface density profile. The flatter profile of NGC 55 probably causes in this galaxy higher infall/outflow rates than in similar galaxies. This likely provokes a strong mixing of gas and a re-distribution of metals.

We present a deep near-infrared (NIR; J, H, and K s bands) photometric catalogue of sources from the Parkes H I Zone of Avoidance (HIZOA) survey, which forms the basis for an investigation of the matter distribution in the Zone of Avoidance. Observations were conducted between 2006 and 2013 using the Infrared Survey Facility (IRSF), a 1.4-m telescope situated at the South African Astronomical Observatory site in Sutherland. The images cover all 1108 HIZOA detections and yield 915 galaxies. An additional 105 bright 2MASS galaxies in the southern ZOA were imaged with the IRSF, resulting in 129 galaxies. The average K s -band seeing and sky background for the survey are 1.38 arcsec and 20.1 mag, respectively. The detection rate as a function of stellar density and dust extinction is found to depend mainly on the H I mass of the H I detected galaxies, which in principal correlates with the NIR brightness of the spiral galaxies. The measured isophotal magnitudes are of sufficient accuracy (errors ∼ 0.02 mag) to be used in a Tully-Fisher analysis. In the final NIR catalogue, 285 galaxies have both IRSF and 2MASS photometry (180 HIZOA plus 105 bright 2MASX galaxies). The K s -band isophotal magnitudes presented in this paper agree, within the uncertainties, with those reported in the 2MASX catalogue. Another 30 galaxies, from the HIZOA northern extension, are also covered by UKIDSS Galactic Plane Survey (GPS) images, which are one magnitude deeper than our IRSF images. A modified version of our photometry pipeline was used to derive the photometric parameters of these UKIDSS galaxies. Good agreement was found between the respective K s -band isophotal magnitudes. These comparisons confirm the robustness of the isophotal parameters and demonstrate that the IRSF images do not suffer from foreground contamination, after star removal, nor under-estimate the isophotal fluxes of ZoA galaxies.

Context. Understanding the astrophysical processes acting within galaxy groups and their effects on the evolution of the galaxy population is one of the crucial topics of modern cosmology, as almost 60% of galaxies in the Local Universe are found in groups. Aims. We aim at learning about galaxy evolution within nearby groups dominated by late-type galaxies, specifically by studying their ultraviolet-emitting stellar population. Methods. We imaged in the far (FUV, λ eff = 1539 Å) and near ultraviolet (NUV, λ eff = 2316 Å) with the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) three nearby groups, namely LGG 93, LGG 127 and LGG 225. We obtained the UV galaxy surface photometry and, for LGG 225, the only group covered by the SDSS, the photometry in u, g, r, i, z bands. We discuss galaxy morphologies looking for interaction signatures and we analyze the spectral energy distribution of galaxies to infer their luminosity-weighted ages. The UV and optical photometry was also used to perform a luminosity-weighted kinematical and dynamical analysis of each group and to evaluate the stellar mass. Results. A few member galaxies in LGG 225 show a distorted UV morphology due to ongoing interactions. (FUV − NUV) colors suggest that spirals in LGG 93 and LGG 225 host stellar populations in their outskirts younger than that of M 31 and M 33 in the Local Group or with less extinction. The irregular interacting galaxy NGC 3447A has a significantly younger stellar population (a few Myr old) than the average of the other irregular galaxies in LGG 225 suggesting that the encounter triggered star formation. The early-type members of LGG 225, NGC 3457 and NGC 3522, have masses of the order of a few 10 9 M , comparable to the Local Group ellipticals. For the most massive spiral in LGG 225, we estimate a stellar mass of ≈4 × 10 10 M , comparable to M 33 in the Local Group. Ages of stellar populations range from a few to ≈7 Gyr for the galaxies in LGG 225. The kinematical and dynamical analysis indicates that LGG 127 and LGG 225 are in a pre-virial collapse phase, i.e. still undergoing dynamical relaxation, while LGG 93 is likely virialized. Both the photometric and the dynamical analyses suggest that LGG 225 is in a more active evolution phase than LGG 93 and LGG 127.
