The 2018–2020 Multi‐Year Drought Sets a New Benchmark in Europe

Abstract: The observed increase in the frequency of droughts and heatwaves over the Northern Hemisphere in the 21st century poses immediate socio-economic threats affecting the well-being of the people by triggering negative health effects. These adverse hydro-meteorological conditions can lead to agricultural and ecological impacts such as crop losses, poor water quality conditions in water bodies, and wildfires. The reduction of the streamflow resulting from a drought event combined with high air temperatures also cre… Show more

“…Europe experienced a series of droughts in the recent period, which were unprecedented compared to the past century (Hari et al 2020, Büntgen et al 2021, Rakovec et al 2022. Although recent efforts were invested in understanding the characteristics of conventional droughts (Ciais et al 2005, Hanel et al 2018, Moravec et al 2021, as well as their physical mechanisms (Ionita et al 2020), an assessment of changes in flash drought events-that sets-up rapidly in a short time-over Europe has been lacking.…”

“…The 2018-2019 multi-year drought was an unprecedented event, but with accelerating climate change, such multi-year droughts are likely to become more frequent (Hari et al, 2020;IPCC, 2018;Rakovec et al, 2022;Samaniego et al, 2018). In this context, this study is one step towards a better understanding of the impacts of such droughts on nitrate export dynamics and the underlying mechanisms within a catchment.…”

“…In 2018-2019, large parts of Europe experienced a severe multi-year drought that was unprecedented in the last 250 years (Hari et al, 2020;Rakovec et al, 2022). This drought, caused by exceptionally low precipitation concurring with high temperatures, had detrimental impacts on vegetation during the growing season and caused massive forest diebacks (Hari et al, 2020;Schuldt et al, 2020).…”

“…Rackovec et al . [23] found that the 2018–2020 drought created a new benchmark in Europe during the period of 1766–2020. Similarly, Aadhar & Mishra [24] examined the worst soil moisture drought in the observed and projected future climate in South Asia.…”
