The 1991 geomagnetic jerk as seen at the Earth's surface and the core-mantle boundary

Abstract: S U M M A R YWe determine the occurrence times of geomagnetic impulses (jerks) around the year 1991 in the three geomagnetic secular variation components for the Earth's surface by a simple optimization algorithm. The geomagnetic field models we use are the low-degree parts of the models CM4 and C 3 FM. We find that the temporal jerk pattern can be detected in fields (n ≤ 4), from which the spherical harmonic degrees n = 2 or n = 3 (tangential) and n = 4 (radial) are representative. To calculate the secular var… Show more

“…9, the differences between the results of the ASM and the harmonic downward continuation are shown. As pointed out by Ballani et al (2010), the radial and horizontal components of the magnetic field are differently influenced by an electrically conducting mantle. Therefore, the differences in the B r -component also differ significantly from those of both horizontal components, because the harmonic downward continuation is not influenced by the conductivity profile in contrast to the ASM.…”

“…Moreover, different approaches have been published to describe the spatial structure of the appearance of jerks on the Earth's surface, or at satellite altitudes (e.g. Pinheiro & Jackson 2008;Ballani et al 2010). In this case, the induction and diffusion processes in an electrically conducting mantle modify significantly the spatiotemporal variability of the geomagnetic jerks.…”

“…Las variaciones temporales llamadas variación secular (SV por su sigla en inglés) son aquéllas que pertenecen a la escala de tiempo entre algunos años y cientos de años *pato@fcaglp.unlp.edu.ar [4]. Estas variaciones son distintas en un sitio que en otro.…”
