The 1982 COCRUST seismic experiment across the Ottawa-Bonnechere graben and Grenville Front in Ontario and Quebec

Abstract: Summary. During the summer of 1982 the Canadian Consortium for Crustal Reconnaissance using Seismic Techniques (COCRUST) conducted a major long‐range seismic refraction and wide‐angle reflection experiment across the Grenville province of the Canadian Shield. Three seismic lines each approximately 300 km in length were located (i) along the Ottawa–Bonnechere graben, (ii) perpendicular to the graben and (iii) perpendicular to the Grenville Front. Geological evidence indicates that the graben may have originate… Show more

“…We refined the solution using a modified simulated annealing algorithm (e.g., Liu et al 1995). In our moment tensor inversion, the published regional crustal structure models (e.g., Mereu et al 1986) were considered good enough for generating synthetic surface waves to be used in the determination of the moment tensor because long-period surface waves are not sensitive to the details of crustal structures.…”

“…The default focal mechanism used to generate the synthetic seismograms is a thrust type, which is representative of the Western Quebec Seismic Zone (WQSZ), Canada (Ma and Eaton 2007, event no. 4 in their Table 3); and the default crustal model is the one with a low velocity layer on the top (adopted from a crustal model in the WQSZ; Ma and Eaton 2009;Mereu et al 1986). Table 1 lists the default focal mechanism and the default crust model (model 1).…”
