The 1912 earthquake in South Baikal: traces in bottom sediments and gas release into the water column

Abstract: The paper presents results of analysis of induced seismicity and changes in processes related to engineering geology in coastal zones of reservoirs of the BaikalAngara cascade. It is proposed to establish a system for monitoring of geological and geophysical processes in order to avoid disturbances in the modes of operation of large hydrotechnical facilities and waterside structures.Key words: induced seismicity, stresses, variations of water levels of natural and manmade reservoirs, landslides, destruction of… Show more

“…Magnetic susceptibility was measured with a BARTINGTON ® MS2E Surface Scanning Sensor (resolution of 1 cm). Detailed descriptions, the determination of biogenic silica (SiO 2bio ), organic carbon (C org ), total nitrogen (N tot ), diatom analyses, granulometry and mineralogy are given in other publications Vologina et al, , 2007Ohlendorf, Sturm, 2008;Vologina, Sturm, 2009;Sturm et al, 2016]. Dating of cores was carried out by 210 Pb and 32 Si measurements [Morgenstern et al, 2013;Sturm et al, 2016].…”

“…The seismic potential of the Baikal basin reaches a magnitude (M) of up to 7.5 [Ulomov, 2014], as estimated from the data on the Tsagan earthquake of January 12, 1862, which was the strongest seismic event within the Baikal basin during the historical observation period before 1901. Its magnitude was 7.5(±0.3); the shaking intensity in the epicentral area was estimated as degree X (MSK-64 scale) [Kondorskaya, Shebalin, 1982;Golenetskii, 1996].…”

“…Formation and deposition of turbidities within the deep basins of Lake Baikal have been investigated and described within the conceptual principles of turbidity current formation in freshwater basins (Sturm and Matter, 1978). Within Lake Baikal they are triggered by earthquakes, catastrophic floods in the catchment and by methane gas eruptions (Lees et al, 1998;Nelson et al, 1999;Back et al, 1999;De Batist et al, 2002;Vologina et al, 2003;Vologina et al, 2012).…”
