The 1000IBD project: multi-omics data of 1000 inflammatory bowel disease patients; data release 1

Abstract: BackgroundInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic complex disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Patients with IBD can experience a wide range of symptoms, but the pathophysiological mechanisms that cause these individual differences in clinical presentation remain largely unknown. In consequence, IBD is currently classified into subtypes using clinical characteristics. If we are to develop a more targeted treatment approach, molecular subtypes of IBD need to be discovered that can be used as new drug ta… Show more

“…Cohort description. For this study we used three independent Dutch cohorts: (1) a general population cohort, LifeLines-DEEP, consisting of 1539 individuals; (2) 544 patients with IBD from the 1000 IBD cohort of the University Medical Center of Groningen (UMCG); and (3) an IBS case-control cohort with 313 participants from Maastricht University Medical Center + (MUMC + ) [37][38][39] . The LifeLines-DEEP cohort consists of volunteers from the general population from whom faecal samples have been collected.…”

“…The 1000 Inflammatory Bowel Disease (1000IBD) cohort consists of patients with IBD recruited at the specialized IBD outpatient clinic of the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands 14 , 74 . IBD diagnosis was made based on accepted radiological, endoscopic and histopathological evaluation.…”

“…Real-time integrated studies are needed to decipher the mechanisms underlying IBD pathogenesis. Such studies would then contribute to the development of personalized therapeutic approaches to IBD [ 97 , 98 , 99 ]. With the advent of artificial intelligence and big data, analysis of the “integratome” (from the so-called “integrated omics”) should also open new avenues of research for enteric virus infections in IBD [ 100 ].…”
