“…It has widely been used to trace the scientific outputs in different fields, such as microbiome-gut-brain axis (MGBA) field ( 9 ), osteoarthritis ( 10 ), aflatoxin ( 9 ), oncolytic virus ( 11 ), and chronic hepatitis B treatment-related research ( 12 ), the zika ( 13 ), respiratory syncytial virus ( 14 ), the West Nile virus ( 15 ), and methanol poisoning ( 16 ). Chu et al did a bibliometrics study to identify the 100 most cited papers in head and neck cancer ( 17 ). The global research trends in the West Nile virus ( 15 ) and methanol poisoning ( 16 ) were studied using bibliometrics methods.…”

“…The citation number does not necessarily signify the scientific worth of a publication; however, it does reflect its influence on the progress of the given clinical/research discipline and quantity of the researchers affiliated with that specific specialty. Hence, publications regarding stem cells (927-14,575) [ 72 ], cardiology (331-3484) [ 73 ], head and neck oncology (628-3205) [ 74 ], and respirology (615-2918) [ 75 ] are more often cited than publications within dentistry (326-2050) [ 44 ], despite all these areas having equal scientific significance.…”

“…This prospective approach is frequently used, for example, to determine the most "successful" articles and authors in the various medical fields. Annually, various articles about "The 100 most cited manuscripts/articles" in specific medical field are published [77][78][79][80]. The data for these analyses can be easily obtained via bibliometric databases, such as Web of Science and Medline (PubMed), making this approach a quick and easy way to identify publications that are highly perceived by the scientific community.…”
