The {001} facets-dependent high photoactivity of BiOCl nanosheets

Abstract: BiOCl nanosheets (BiOCl NSs) were synthesized by hydrolyzing a hierarchical flowerlike molecular precursor (Bi(n)(Tu)(x)Cl(3n), Tu = thiourea). High photoactivity of {001} facets of BiOCl NSs was observed, and the mechanism was discussed.

“…(001) of diffraction intensity exhibits a decreased peak in all the powders related to (110) which is along the c-axis and it forms thin slabs. [40,41] FE-SEM was used to assess the morphologies of the synthesised products ( Figure 2). BiOCl without PVP (Figure 2(a)) consisted of round, large particles.…”

“…The band at 510 cm ¹1 corresponds to the symmetrical stretching vibration of BiO. 23) When the content of BiOBr in hybrid photocatalyst increases, the strength of absorption peak at 510 cm ¹1 increases, and the strength of absorption peak at 810, 12621941 and 2161 cm ¹1 decreases. The light absorption properties of the as-prepared samples were characterized by UVvis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.…”

“…Light between the semitransparent BiOCl flakes is reflected and multiplied, creating an impressive deep luster characteristic of natural pearls (6). The layered structure provides a large enough space to polarize the related atoms and orbitals, and then induces the presence of internal static electric fields perpendicular to the [Bi 2 O 2 ] slabs and halogen anionic slabs in BiOCl (7,8). Owing to the unique layered structure and high photo-corrosion stabilities in the presence of redox pairs, BiOCl has been used as a novel material for photocatalysts (6).…”

“…Among the diverse photocatalytic materials, BiOCl is mostly studied because of its unique layered structure and high chemical stability, a great deal of research has been conducted to study its photocatalytic performance under UV irradiation (4,5). The tetragonal bipyramidal crystal geometry of BiOCl can be usually flattened into flakes or platelets with a high aspect ratio.…”
