The digital economy is an important engine to promote sustainable economic growth. Exploring the mechanism by which the digital economy promotes economic development, industrial upgrading and environmental improvement is an issue worth studying. This paper takes China as an example for study and uses the data of 286 cities from 2011 to 2019. In the empirical analysis, the direction distance function (DDF) and the Global Malmquist-Luenberger (GML) productivity index methods are used to measure the green total factor productivity (GTFP), while Tobit, quantile regression, impulse response function and intermediary effect models are used to study the relationship among digital economy development, industrial structure upgrading and GTFP. The results show that: (1) The digital economy can significantly improve China’s GTFP; however, there are clear regional differences. (2) The higher the GTFP, the greater the promotion effect of the digital economy on the city’s GTFP. (3) From a dynamic long-term perspective, the digital economy has indeed positively promoted China’s GTFP. (4) The upgrading of industrial structures is an intermediary transmission mechanism for the digital economy to promote GTFP. This paper provides a good reference for driving green economic growth and promoting the environment.

At present, there is a consensus that the digital economy provides a new impetus for sustainable economic development. Based on domestic and foreign literature reviews, this paper focuses on representative industry sectors; we present China’s 2011–2018 digital economy development index, for 173 cities, from a three-level perspective—internet development, digital literacy, and industrial efficiency improvement. Various models, such as the instrumental variable method, the double difference method, the intermediary effect model, and the spatial econometric model were used to quantitatively analyze the impact of digital economic development on urban economic growth in China. The study finds that: (1) digital economic development in China has a positive effect on urban economic growth, and a heterogeneity of effects exists between different cities. (2) Urban employment is the “effect mechanism” of digital economic growth on urban economic growth. (3) The direct effect of digital economic development on urban economic growth in China is positive, the spillover effect is positive, the direct effect is greater than the spillover effect, and the total effect is positive. The research results enrich the measurement methods used in urban digital economic development in China, providing new perspectives for studying the influence mechanisms of digital economic development on urban economic growth.

Analysis of the impact of information communication technology on economic growth: empirical evidence from Asian countries

PurposeThis study examines the causal relationship between information communication technology (ICT) and economic growth in high-income and middle-income Asian countries.Design/methodology/approachThis study utilises a high-quality data from 25 Asian countries from 2000 to 2018. This study presents the robustness results by employing panel cointegration and estimation procedures to account for the endogeneity and cross-sectional dependence issues.FindingsThe results illustrate that high-income Asian countries have achieved positive and significant economic development from high Internet penetration. Additionally, the middle-income countries have started to benefit from ICT Internet. The findings show that the telephone line and mobile phone penetration is highly capable of promoting economic growth in middle-income Asian countries.Practical implicationsIn high-income Asia countries, an appropriate ICT infrastructure policy will support feasible ICT penetration, which may drive the processes of economic development and innovation that contribute to economic growth. Moreover, in middle-income Asian countries, the establishment of better-quality ICT service and infrastructure is more critical. Policymakers should accommodate sufficient support to establish the ICT infrastructure and expand ICT penetration.Originality/valueThis study reveals that high-income Asian countries have been more proactive and effective than middle-income countries in embracing ICT to foster economic growth. Examining the case of high-income and middle-income Asian countries provides comprehensive insight for policymakers regarding the relevance of ICT in boosting economic growth through the advantages of technology expansion.
