Thaddeus Bellingshausen's scientific programme in the Southern Ocean, 1818–21

Abstract: Following Cook's historic circumnavigation (1772–75) of the globe in Antarctic waters and his reports of great numbers of seals on South Georgia, considerable numbers of commercial sealing expeditions had made new discoveries of islands in the vicinity of the Antarctic Peninsula. However, not until 1819 was another government-sponsored exploring and scientific expedition organized to continue the search for the then still-unknown southern continent. This time the expedition was a Russian one, and in command of… Show more

“…They are also compared to the observations made during earlier circumnavigations by Cook and Bellingshausen (for fuller comments on those observations, see Rubin 1982aRubin , 1982b. These observations and measurements not only provide a considerable body of reliable data, but substantiate the reputation of Biscoe as an assiduous and careful observer.…”

“…Although water temperatures at depth have doubtful value, two were recorded, presumably using the same method of retrieving sea water for subsequent measurement as had Cook and Bellingshausen (Rubin 1982a(Rubin , 1982bRoss 1982: 229). In the second season, 34 sea-surface temperatures were recorded to the whole degree and only one to the half degree.…”

“…Earlier data are obtained from the scientific observations of the Discovery and from whaling expeditions during the late 1920s and early 1930s (Mackintosh and Herdman, 1940). Finally, some 18th century data are available from the observations of Cook and of Bellingshausen (Herdman, 1959; Rubin, 1982a, b) which provide some descriptions of sea-ice extent during summer months.…”
