Genetic diversities of the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes in Pinus parviflora were studied in 16 populations, which were distributed across most of the species' range in Japan. Six mitochondrial DNA haplotypes were identified among the 16 populations. The intrapopulation diversity of allozymes was similar to that of other endemic woody species (H S ¼ 0.259). Although P. parviflora is distributed in discrete populations, differentiation between these was very low (G ST ¼ 0.044). In addition, the extent of genetic differentiation between two varieties (var. pentaphylla and var. parviflora) was extremely low (G VT ¼ 0.001). Intrapopulation diversity of mitochondrial DNA was also very low (H S ¼ 0.098), but population differentiation was high (G ST ¼ 0.863). Moreover, the distribution of haplotypes reflected the taxonomic differences between P. parviflora var. pentaphylla and var. parviflora. The populations of var. pentaphylla and var. parviflora contained different haplotypes. Differing modes of inheritance may account for the differences in nuclear and mitochondrial genetic diversity.

We present a theoretical study of the ultraviolet ͑UV͒ optical properties of carbon nanotubes based on the local-density approximation in density functional theory and the generalized tight-binding approximation. Our calculations indicate that the absorption spectrum in the UV region depends strongly not only on nanotube diameter but also on chiral index. In zigzag nanotubes with even indices, peculiar features in the UV absorption spectrum emerge. In sharp contrast, these features are absent from the spectrum of zigzag nanotubes with odd indices. These spectral features are characteristic of interband transitions near the M point of the hexagonal Brillouin zone of graphene.

Transparent semiconductor thin films of Zn 1Àx Mg x O (0 £ x £ 0.36) were prepared using a sol-gel process; the crystallinity levels, microstructures, and optical properties affected by Mg content were studied. The experimental results showed that addition of Mg species in ZnO films markedly decreased the surface roughness and improved transparency in the visible range. A Zn 1Àx Mg x O film with an x-value of 0.2 exhibited the best average transmittance, namely 93.7%, and a root-mean-square (RMS) roughness of 1.63 nm. Therefore, thin-film transistors (TFTs) with a Zn 0.8 Mg 0.2 O active channel layer were fabricated and found to have n-type enhancement mode. The Zn 0.8 Mg 0.2 O TFT had a field-effect mobility of 0.1 cm 2 /V s, threshold voltage of 6.0 V, and drain current on/off ratio of more than 10 7 .
