Texturing Methods of Abrasive Grinding Wheels: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Creating textures on abrasive wheels is a strategy that allows a significant improvement in grinding operations. The reduction of the internal stresses in the workpiece and the temperature during the grinding operation generates an increase in the dimensional accuracy of the workpiece and a longer tool life. Textured abrasive wheels can be produced in many different ways. Depending on the processing method, the dimensional accuracy of the tool and its applicability is changed. Some methods can produce tools wi… Show more

“…Existing publications in the area of abrasive tool construction deal with interference with its design by making notches on the active surface [ 29 ], segmented construction [ 30 ], or discontinuities and modifications of porosity size [ 31 ]. Researchers have also analyzed the effect of grinding wheel texturing on the grinding process [ 32 ]. Texturing can also take place during dressing of the grinding wheel [ 33 ].…”

“…Abrasive discs can be prepared from natural or synthetic materials, and they are usually prepared by attaching hard and abrasive materials to a binding matrix material. They are frequently produced from materials such as SiC, BC, BN, CeO, zirconia, aluminum oxide, iron oxide, silica and corundum [17][18][19][20][21][22]. However, today, studies on the preparation of abrasive discs from more sustainable, Apricot kernel shell is suitable filler for abrasive materials with its strong, hard structure and dense cellulose content.…”

“…cheaper and environmentally friendly materials are increasing. Within the scope of these studies, materials such as clay, cellulose fibers, talc, phenol-formaldehyde resin and rubber were tried in the preparation of abrasive discs [19][20][21][22][23]. However, today, studies on the development of optimum abrasive disc materials are increasing, depending on the purpose and place of use.…”

“…Sherk first proposed grooved grinding wheels in 1936 to reduce grinding heat significantly [19] . Verkerk J introduced the groove factor η [20] , which quantified the grooving process of the grinding wheel in 1979. Tawakoli et al [21] proposed a grinding wheel with specially-designed abrasive segments to increase the grinding efficiency of materials with low thermal conductivity and difficult cutting in 1994.…”
