Texture zeros and hierarchical masses from flavour (mis)alignment

Abstract: We introduce an unconventional interpretation of the fermion mass matrix elements. As the full rotational freedom of the gauge-kinetic terms renders a set of infinite bases called weak bases, basis-dependent structures as mass matrices are unphysical. Matrix invariants, on the other hand, provide a set of basis-independent objects which are of more relevance. We employ one of these invariants to give a new parametrisation of the mass matrices. By virtue of it, one gains control over its implicit implications on… Show more

“…However, as noted above, recent reactor neutrino experiments [2][3][4] have indicted that the U e3 matrix element deviates sizably from zero jU e3 j ≈ 0.15. Modified models that produce sizable corrections to the mixing parameters have been proposed, but often require more complicated models involving nonvanishing higher order contributions [6], soft A 4 symmetry breaking terms [7], misalignment of mass matrix elements [8], or larger symmetry groups than A 4 (e.g., T 0 ; Δð6 × 10 2 Þ; ðZ 18 × Z 6 Þ⋊S 3 ; T 13 ) [9][10][11][12]. Here we propose a minimal modification to the Alteralli A 4 model by considering an additional Dirac mass term allowed by A 4 symmetry contractions that are also allowed by the other symmetries assumed in the model.…”

“…(19): null matrix elements, M ij = 0, and relations among matrix elements, M ij = M kl . Both requirements can be met by several approaches, for example, texture-zeros [26,29,[35][36][37][38][39][40], flavour symmetries [41], reinterpretation of the fermion mass matrix elements [42], among others.…”
