Hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) was simply prepared through pyrolysis of sodium citrate and further used as modified material for the determination of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA). Compared with a conventional glassy carbon electrode, the modified sensor achieved a larger active area and a faster electron transfer rate due to the high specific area and unique hierarchical porous construction. The separate and simultaneous analysis of DA and UA using the modified electrode was carried out by amperometry (AP) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), respectively. For separate measurement of each analyte, the linear ranges were 0.027-417 μM and 0.13-806 μM for DA and UA, with the detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.012 and 0.06 μM, while for simultaneous detection, it exhibited the linear detection ranges of 0.04-100μM for DA and 0.2-100μM for UA, with the detection limits (S/N = 3) of 0.018 and 0.07 μM, respectively. In addition, the sensor is applied to simultaneous detection of DA and UA in spiked samples of juice, milk and urine samples, and satisfactory recoveries were obtained (97.0-104.0%). The results demonstrated that the modified HPC sensor has the advantages of simplicity, sensitivity, and practicality.

Aluminium batteries (AlBs) have gathered considerable attention, primarily due to their high capacity, their low cost, the large abundance of Aluminium in the Earth’s crust, and the recyclability of the Al metal anode. However, several hurdles must be surpassed to make AlBs a feasible energy storage technology and two of them are interconnected; the presence of an ionic and electronically insulating native oxide layer on the Al metal anode that calls for special non-aqueous, most often ionic liquid-based acidic electrolytes, to enable reversible plating and stripping of Al. We here find the passivation layer initially formed in contact with an ILE to have a porous and very complex nature, i.e. an outer inorganic/organic layer and an inner oxide-rich layer. Furthermore, it grows under open circuit voltage conditions by simultaneous dissolution and re-deposition of dissolved products, while during galvanostatic cycling this is exacerbated by an electrochemical etching that causes pitting corrosion of the Al metal itself. All of this leads to unstable interfaces being formed and the co-existence of several species at the Al metal anode surface, of which a proper understanding and mitigation are crucial to make AlBs a reality.

The effects of an ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) on the localized corrosion behavior of 7B50-T7751 aluminum alloy in a sodium chloride + hydrogen peroxide solution were investigated through microstructural observation, immersion testing, and electrochemical measurements. The results revealed that this alloy is prone to pitting. However, the localized corrosion resistance can be significantly improved via both one-pass USRP and 12-pass USRP treatment. Furthermore, in the test solution, the thickness and the acceptor density of the passivation film were affected by the USRP treatment. The improved corrosion resistance of one-pass USRP-treated samples resulted mainly from the introduced compressive residual stress. However, this stress played a secondary role in the considerable enhancement observed for the corrosion resistance of the 12-pass USRP-treated samples. This enhancement is attributed primarily to the nanocrystalline surface and homogeneous surface microstructure induced by the multiple-pass USRP treatment.
