*This is a 2009 master's thesis on German light verb constructions, submitted here solely for the purpose of making it publicly available*. ABSTRACT: In dieser Arbeit werden drei linguistische Theorien hinsichtlich ihrer Fähigkeit überprüft, deutsche Funktionsverbgefüge zu erklären. Als Kriterien für eine gute Theorie nenne ich die Eigenschaft, grammatische Konstruktionen systematisch zu erklären, ohne Ad-Hoc-Annahmen postulieren zu müssen; außerdem sollte eine Theorie, die Sprache als kognitives System ernst nimmt, falsifizierbare Hypothesen über die mentale Prozessualisierung von Grammatik auf- stellen.Für das erste Kriterium sind Funktionsverbgefüge interessant, weil sie sich sehr idiosynkratisch in Syntax und Semantik verhalten, besonders was die Zuweisung semantischer und syntaktischer Rollen angeht. Ich skizziere dieses Verhalten; Daten aus Grammatikalitätsurteilen belegen, dass das scheinbar idiosynkratische Auftreten von Funktionsverbgefügen systematischen Charakter hat. Das zweite Kriterium wird an Hand von Ergebnissen einer Studie überprüft, die die Prozessualisierung von Funktionsverbgefügen untersucht hat.Ein Vergleich zwischen Generativer Syntax, Konstruktionsgrammatik und der Tripartite Parallel Architecture ergibt, dass letztere beide Kriterien für einer kognitiv fundierte linguistische Theorie erfüllt.

The functional structures in German were criticized by the linguistic critics, but for a long time they have not been a research object.The semantic syntactic characteristics of these structures became an object of study not until the second half of the 20th century. In the 1960s, linguists began to analyse the tendency to use the nominal style, especially in the the academic, official and professional field. The main purpose of the article is to analyze the functional structures and their components in German by comparing them with the corresponding equivalents in Armenian to reveal their semantic-syntactic characteristics. These constructions are being interpreted as an autonomous subcategory placed between semantics, syntax and word formation (morphology).
