Research background: France is one of the leading textile manufacturers in Europe. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the current practices in the industry. The lack of crisis management characterized by delayed payments, order cancellations, fixed costs, and other unpredictable expenses, turned it difficult for firms to guarantee liquidity and to preserve their economic sustainability. Purpose of the article: To analyse how the pandemic has affected the economic sustainability of Textile industry in France. Methods: Using the financial reports of 57 French firms operating in Textile industry, in 2018-2020, from ORBIS, a financial analysis is performed using the ratios of profitability, liquidity and indebtedness, as well as the profit margin and labour productivity to evaluate how these firms have been tackling the challenges of the recent crisis; and, thus, evaluate their economic sustainability. Findings & Value added: Results suggest that micro firms and SMEs have better financial profitability, display higher levels of liquidity, are less indebted and are more capable to increase their profit margins. Yet, the larger firm shows a higher level of labour productivity, followed by the micro enterprises. Thus, smaller French textile firms appear to be more economically sustainable during the pandemic. This might suggest that smaller firms are more flexible, resilient, and capable to quickly adapt their operations to market’s needs. Such findings provide policy insights on the implementation of the appropriate strategies during times of crisis.

Fast fashion perpetuates the perception that clothing products are cheap and are easily disposed of. Consequently, the fashion industry contributes great concern for environmental impact. Product-service system (PSS) may serve as an integrated product-service solution to support sustainable fashion. While there is an increasing trend in PSS studies, the literature studies in fashion PSS remains limited. This paper aims to explore the research topics in fashion PSS studies by examining topics addressed in fashion PSS literature, how PSS may contribute to sustainability in the context of the fashion industry, as well as positive and negative value perceived consumers in adopting PSS fashion. The research is conducted through literature review retrieved from Scopus and analyzed according to the aim of this paper. The results show that topics addressed in fashion PSS are related to potential drivers and barriers to adopt PSS fashion, business model, environmental impact, and life cycle analysis. The role of PSS in the fashion context is product and use-oriented. The consumer perception on adopting PSS fashion is classified as emotional, functional, social, financial, environmental, and psychological aspects.

The purpose of this study is to select an appropriate commercial neutral cellulase enzyme for denim garments bio-polishing to achieve specific industrial goals. A full factorial experimental design was used to evaluate the effect of factors considered in the optimization of the bio-polishing process (fabric ID: x1, treatment time: x2, treatment temperature: x3, enzyme concentration: x4, storage time: x5, inactivation step: x6 and enzyme type: x7). Experiments were conducted using laboratory washing machine. Subjective evaluation was performed at a pilot and at an industrial scale. Tear, tensile strength and subjective evaluation concerning hand feel, fabric color, indigo dye pocket back staining and fuzziness extent were evaluated. Results showed that x6 and x7 had significant effects on the fabric tear and tensile strength loss. In the optimization, the great dependence between observed and predicted tear strength and tensile strength loss, the correlation coefficient of the models (R 2 > 0.85) and the important value of F-ratio proved the validity of the models. Results showed that denim leg panels treated with the enzyme Lava-Cell NSZ presented a minimum loss of tear and tensile strength. A low-temperature and time enzymatic bio-polishing process was developed at industrial scale.
