A novel benzopyran-based platinum (II)–3-hydroxy-2-tolyl-4 H -chromen-4-one (HToC) complex has been prepared and studied by UV–visible spectrophotometry. The study is based on the colored complexation between Pt(II) and HToC in the pH range of 8.92–9.21, resulting in the formation of a stable binary yellow complex exhibiting λ max at 509–525 nm. The formed complex maintains linearity between 0.0 and 1.8 μg Pt(II) mL –1 . The well-known qualitative analytical methods, including Job’s method of continuous variations and the mole ratio approach, have both proven that the stoichiometry of the complex is 1:2 [Pt(II)/HToC]. Hence, the analytical results suggest that the formed platinum complex exhibits a square planar geometry. The values of various attributes corresponding to spectrophotometric studies and statistical calculations, such as the molar extinction coefficient (6.790 × 10 4 L mol –1 cm –1 ), Sandell’s sensitivity (0.0029 μg Pt(II) cm –2 ), standard deviation (± 0.0011), RSD (0.317%), limit of detection (0.0147 μg mL –1 ) and correlation coefficient (0.9999), show that the performed study satisfies all of the criteria for good sensitivity, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. In order to have an apprehension of the molecular geometry and other structural specifics of the complex, DFT studies have been carried out. The in vitro anticancer potential of the ligand and its platinum complex in the human breast cancer cell line (T-27D), as determined by the MTT assay, reveals that the complex has better antiproliferative potential than the ligand. The antimicrobial potential of the complex has been successfully tested against both Gram-positive and -negative bacteria. Antioxidant capacity results suggest the better radical scavenging capacity of the complex than that of the ligand.

A series of six sulfur-bridged dinuclear silver(I) thiosemicarbazone complexes were synthesized through the reaction of silver(I) nitrate with 4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazone derivatives together with triphenylphosphine (PPh3) (in a 1:1:2 molar ratio). Following structural characterizations using various techniques such as elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, as well as 1H, 13C, 31P{1H}s, COSY, and 1H-13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, it was found that the thiosemicarbazone ligand exists in the form of a thione rather than thiol tautomer. Subsequently, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cell lines, as well as the HT-29 colon cancer cell lines, were used to investigate the in vitro antiproliferative activities of these complexes. In all cases, the IC50 values were in the potent micromolar range. Besides, the aforementioned complexes also had good antiplasmodial activity against chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum, as per the results of histidine-rich protein 2 (HRP2) assays and cytotoxicity evaluations of MDBK cells.

A series of novel isolongifoleno[7,8‐d]thiazolo[3,2‐a]pyrimidine derivatives (4a–4x) were synthesized from isolongifolanone according fragment‐based design strategy, and their anticancer activity against human aortic smooth muscle cells (HASMC), human breast cancer (MCF‐7) cells, human cervical cancer (HeLa) cells, and human liver cancer (HepG2) cells were investigated. Results of the anticancer activity illustrated that most of the compounds showed potent antitumor activity and compound 4i proved to be the most active derivative with IC50 values of 0.33 ± 0.24 (for MCF‐7 cells), 0.52 ± 0.13 (for HeLa cells), and 3.09 ± 0.11 μM (for HepG2 cells), respectively. Moreover, we assessed the effects of 4i on cell apoptosis, cell cycle distribution, mitochondrial membrane potential, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The results indicated that compound 4i altered mitochondrial membrane potential and produced ROS leading to cell apoptosis of MCF‐7 cells in a dose‐dependent manner, however, without affecting cell cycle progression. These findings suggested that 4i was an effective compound and provided a promising candidate for anticancer drugs.
