“…The isolate (MIC, 11 mg/liter) was from the CSF of a 10-month-old child. The same year, tetracycline-resistant pneumococci were isolated from the sputa of four elderly patients with chronic bronchitis in the United Kingdom (222) and an outbreak of tetracycline-resistant pneumococci was detected in two general wards in Liverpool, United Kingdom (264). Five of the ten patients had received tetracycline prior to the isolation of the resistant strain, all failed to respond to tetracycline or relapsed after initial improvement, and one had a profuse growth of tetracycline-resistant pneumococci in the sputum 4 months after discharge from hospital (264).…”

“…The generally positive response of pneumococcal infections to penicillin treatment in the past and the exquisite susceptibility of pneumococci to penicillins in vitro seem to negate the possibility that penicillin-resistant pneumococci may appear in human disease (3, 6, 8, 9, 11). On the other hand, tetracycline-resistant pneumococci have been found in pneumonias (4,13,14), and, recently, erythromycin-resistant pneumococci were also detected (7). In 1967, Hansman (5) isolated typical pneumococci which were relatively resistant to penicillin from a patient with bronchiectasis.…”

“…From the study of the results of several workers (Evans and Hansmans 1963, Richards and Rycroft 1963, Turner and Leeds 1963, Dixon 1967, Appelbaum et al 1977, Zackrisson and Bronson 1981, Howard et al 1978, Jacobs et al 1978) and from the results of this work it can be concluded that : 1) most Str. pneumoniae strains are still sensitive to commonly used antibiotics, like penicillin, ampicillin, erythromycin, tetracyclin, chloramphenicol, trimethoprime -sulfamethoxazole, tobramycin and amikacin.…”
