Tetracycline and Its Analogues: a Therapeutic Paradigm in Periodontal Diseases

Abstract: This article discusses the use of tetracyclines in the clinical management of periodontal infections. A review of the drugs' pharmacology, pharmacokinetics, and potential adverse effects shows that they are relatively safe if used in appropriate dosages and under controlled conditions. Current data suggest that the routine use of tetracyclines in conjunction with the treatment of periodontitis is unnecessary. However, their distinctive characteristics can be utilized in different delivery systems as an adjunct… Show more

“…The members of tetracycline family are among the most important broad spectrum antibiotics, generally safe, well tolerated with fewer side effects [29]. Minocycline HCl a semi synthetic tetracycline [30] is one of the most active antibiotics for microorganisms associated with periodontitis [31,32].…”

“…With the widespread interest in the use of systemic and locally‐delivered antimicrobial agents to treat periodontitis ( Slots & Rams 1990, Smith et al 1994, Needleman et al 1995, Mombelli & Winkelhoff 1997, Greenstein & Polson 1998), measurement of periodontal pocket drug concentrations has become increasingly utilised. The tetracyclines have been used extensively as adjuncts to the management of periodontitis ( Listgarten et al 1978, Lindhe et al 1983, Newman et al 1994, Haffajee et al 1995, Needleman et al 1998a, Weinberg 1998).…”
