Tetracycline Allergy

Abstract: Despite the widespread use of tetracycline antibiotics since the late 1940s, tetracycline hypersensitivity reactions have rarely been described in the literature. A comprehensive PubMed search was performed, including allergic and serious adverse reactions attributed to the tetracyclines class of antibiotics. Of the evaluated tetracycline analogs, minocycline was attributed to the greatest overall number and severity of serious adverse events reported in the literature, with notable reactions primarily reporte… Show more

“…The most common reported reaction due to tetracycline administration is a fixed drug reaction. 27 Overall, IgE-mediated immediate-type anaphylactic hypersensitivity reactions due to tetracycline use are rare, typically nonfatal when an adequate intervention is performed. When reported, most anaphylactic reactions noted by case reports have occurred within 10-45 minutes following oral or intravenous administration of tetracycline, while one case of anaphylaxis following intramuscular administration occurred rapidly in less than 20 seconds.…”

“…Oral minocycline, doxycycline, or tetracycline showed to decrease the severity of skin rash induced by EGFRi, [61][62][63][64][65][66] however, doxycycline presents a better safety profile regarding allergic potential. 67 With respect to pediatric population, doxycycline and minocycline can be prescribed to children older than eight years old and amoxicillin to children younger than eight years old. 68 Erythromycin (macrolide) is not an appropriate first-line choice as oral antibiotics unless the tetracyclines are contraindicated.…”
