Tetra(2,6‐dichlorophenyl)porphyrin — a superior sensitiser for the singlet‐oxygen ene reaction (Schenck reaction)

Abstract: The very useful singlet-oxygen ene reaction of reluctant alkenes, e.g. l , 5 , 7, 8 , and, in particular, the mono(ally1 hydroperoxides) 10 and 11, is handicapped by the instability of the sensitiser TPP. A comparative study of TPP, TPFPP, and TDCPP in the singlet-oxygen ene reaction of these alkenes shows that 1) the persistence increases in the order TPP < TPFPP < TDCPP, rendenng TDCPP the sensitiser of choice for the generation of singlet-oxygen in non-polar solvents, 2) the persistence of the tetraarylporp… Show more

“…Tetra (2,6-dichlorophenyl) porphyrin (TDCPP) 4 (Scheme 2) is one of the most active sensitizers for use in photooxidations. 21,22 The presence of chlorine atoms at the ortho positions of the meso phenyl groups confers a great resistance to degradation. As far as we know, there has been no attempt to study the behavior of this kind of porphyrin macrocycle covalently linked to polystyrene based polymers as heterogeneous sensitizers.…”

“…Thus, the development of fluorine‐containing photosensitizers for PDT, which could also serve as agents for magnetic resonance imaging or PET, appears promising. In addition, halogenated porphyrins are expected to show high singlet oxygen yields, which would make them excellent candidates for photosensitizers (3,4,15,16). In this report, we study the photophysical properties of some fluorinated aryl and alkyl porphyrins that may be useful in this area.…”

“…The photophysical behavior of porphyrins is relevant to areas such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) (1,2) †, development of sensitizers for photooxidation (3,4), fluorescent probes (5), solar energy storage (6), energy trapping in light emitting diodes (LED) (7,8) and spectral hole burning (9). For applications such as photosensitizers, PDT, LED and spectral hole burning the properties of the triplet states of these molecules are particularly important.…”
