This paper presents the results of axial compressive tests of the concrete filled circular CFRP-steel tubular (C-CFRP-CFST) stub columns. The test results showed that the CFRP jackets enhanced the load bearing capacity of the stub columns effectively. Enhancement of the columns' stiffness due to the CFRP jackets was also observed. Also, the steel tube and the CFRP tube work concurrently before failure. A constitutive relationship suitable for concrete confined by circular CFRP-steel composite tube was proposed, and a finite element model was established by using ABAQUS for analyzing load-deformation relationship of the composite stub columns and it shows that the results predicted check well with that of the test and were on the safe side. Analysis based on ABAQUS indicates that, outer tube of the C-CFRP-CFST stub columns can provide confinement force for concrete core even during initial loading period. Additionally, the initial stress in the steel tube can postpone the mutual reaction between the steel tube and the concrete, while it has a little influence on the peak value of the confinement force; adhesive strength has little effect on compressive performances of the stub columns. Finally, the index and parametric expression of load bearing capacity of the C-CFRP-CFST stub columns were proposed, and the proposed equations can be used to calculate the load bearing capacity reasonably.

Thirty-two specimens are experimentally tested in this paper to study the static performance of axially compressed circular concrete filled CFRP-steel tubular (C-CF-CFRP-ST) columns. The tested results indicate that, for columns with relative small slenderness ratio, failure is dominated by the strength loss of the materials. However, for columns with relative large slenderness ratio, failure is controlled by instability. The load versus deflection curves at the mid-height of the composite column can be divided into three stages, i.e., elastic, elasto-plastic and softening stage. Analyses of the tested results show that distribution of longitudinal strains in the steel tube over depth on the cross-section is approximately linear, and the steel tube and its outer CFRP material can cooperate both longitudinally and transversely. The longitudinal strain and the transverse strain at a point have opposite signs, and the steel tube under longitudinal tension has no transverse confinement effect on its concrete. The Deformed modes of the columns, the axial load verses deflection curves at the mid-height, the axial load verses axial shortening curves and the stresses in the steel tube are simulated by using finite element method. The calculated results agree well with the experimental results to prove the accuracy of the finite element model. Stresses in the concrete, the steel tube and the CFRPs are analyzed by using finite element method. The numerical results show that the interaction force between the steel tube and the concrete decreases gradually from compressive region to tensile region. The adhesive strength between the concrete and the steel tube has little effect on the critical buckling load and on the elastic stiffness of the columns. Equation for calculating the critical buckling load of the composite columns is presented, and the estimated results agree well with the experimental results.

In recent years, concrete-filled box columns (CFBCs) have been commonly used in high-rise buildings. In particular, steel box columns filled with high-performance concrete (HPC) are more common than concrete-encased steel columns. However, a number of fire test results show that there are significant differences between HPC and normal concrete after being subjected to high temperatures. Therefore, the residual strength of HPC-filled box columns exposed to fire was determined in this study. Two groups of full-size specimens were fabricated. The specimen of the control group was loaded at room temperature to achieve its ultimate load. On the other hand, fire tests were carried out on three specimens of the experimental group to investigate their residualload-bearing capacity after exposure to elevated temperatures (400, 600, and 800 °C). To monitor and measure the temperature of the CFBC specimens during the fire test, an appropriate number of thermocouples were buried inside and outside the column. The thermocouples can effectively measure the temperature of the CFBC specimens during the fire test. The test results show that the residual ultimate strength of CFBC specimens increased at 400 and 600 °C by 5.2 and 1.0% respectively, compared with room-temperature strength. However, with a further increase in temperature to 800 °C, the residual ultimate strength was 15.7% lower than that of the control group at room temperature.
