Testosterone Secretion by Foetal Rat Testes in Vitro

Abstract: Testosterone secretion by foetal rat testes (13 1/2-21 1/2 days of gestation) explanted for 3 days in a synthetic medium was measured every 24 h by radioimmunoassay. During the first day of explantation, the foetal testis produced, respectively, 1013 +/- 132, 8734 +/- 1118, 9179 +/- 2185 and 3886 +/- 309 (S.E.M.) pg/testis when explanted at 14 1/2, 16 1/2, 18 1/2 and 21 1/2 days respectively. Testosterone production by 13 1/2-day-old testes was not detectable on the first day of culture, but appeared on subseq… Show more

“…These findings are similar to those observed in other species such as rats [6,14,20], sheep [21] and pigs [16]. In rats, the onset of testicular testosterone production has been reported to start on Day 15.5 p.c.…”

“…These results suggest that GnRH-R mRNA is translated into a functional receptor protein very soon after its formation, but this cannot be verified by immunodetection, as antibodies against GnRH-R are not available at the present time. It is well documented that, in vivo, after reaching its maximum around 18·5 dpc, testosterone production by the testis remains unchanged (Warren et al 1984), or decreases when it is expressed per cell (Picon 1976, Tapanainen et al 1984, Saez 1994. During the same period, the density of cells producing testosterone per testis has been reported to be constant (Tapanainen et al 1984, Kerr & Knell 1988, Saez 1994.…”

“…However, functional gonadal steroids can be detected in the blood stream of the rat in as early as the last week of gestation [27,28] In the learning process, there are two components: short-term memory for recent events -working memory [29] and long-term acquired memory for past eventsreference memory [30].…”
