Testosterone metabolism in Neomysis integer following exposure to benzo(a)pyrene

Abstract: Cytochromes P450 (CYPs) are important enzymes involved in the regulation of hormone synthesis and in the detoxification and/or activation of xenobiotics. CYPs are found in virtually all organisms, from archae, and eubacteria to eukaryota. A number of endocrine disruptors are suspected of exerting their effects through disruption of normal CYP function.Consequently, alterations in steroid hormone metabolism through changes in CYP could provide an important tool to evaluate potential effects of endocrine disrupt… Show more

“…Especially with regard to bBol, reproducibility of in vivo exposure experiments with N. integer has been reported by De Wasch et al [33] to be poor. In contrast, the use of N. integer's testosterone-metabolism has proven its use in eco-toxicological studies [44][45][46]57]. For the purpose of simulating vertebrate metabolic pathways however, another invertebrate L. sericata, was evaluated as model organism [32].…”

“…Entanglement and blocking of PS-MPs in the tissues may disrupt physiological processes [6], hamper energy flows [7] and even affect the survival and growth of marine biota [8]. Mysid shrimps (Neomysis japonica), as an ecotoxicological model for environmental sensitivity [9], have been used in evaluating toxicity of heavy metal [10], PAHs [11] …”
