Dynamic changes in circulating estradiol level, including increase at menarche and decrease at menopause, occur in a woman's lifetime. Circulating estradiol levels decrease drastically during the menopausal transition, though the levels differ among races. It has been reported that estradiol levels in both Japanese and Chinese women were lower than those in Caucasians, Hispanic and AfricanAmericans (1).Based on data obtained in a previous study (2), we re-analyzed data for 169 healthy men and 252 healthy women aged from 40 to 85 years in the population-based study with addition of data for premenopausal women. Change in circulating estradiol in women from the menopausal transition to postmenopause is characterized as follows : high estradiol level in premenopausal women is drastically decreased and estradiol level in postmenopausal women is significantly lower than that in agematched men. Zarówno zbyt małe, jak i nadmiernie duże stęże-nia androgenów mogą powodować wiele negatywnych zmian w funkcjonowaniu organizmu kobiety. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi przegląd wiedzy na temat fizjologicznej roli oraz zmian stężeń androgenów u kobiet w okresie około-i pomenopauzalnym.Słowa kluczowe: kobiety, androgeny, menopauza, hiperandrogenizm, leczenie androgenami. SummaryAn appropriate level of androgens plays an important role in many physiological functions in women, such as sexual, metabolic and psychological ones. It is well established that extreme levels of circulating androgens, whether low or high, may lead to negative effects on women's health. This article is a review of knowledge of the physiological role and changes of androgen levels in peri-and postmenopausal women.

Estrogen-containing hormone therapy (HT) is the most widely prescribed and wellestablished treatment for menopausal symptoms. High quality evidence confi rms that estrogen effectively treats hot fl ushes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Progestins are combined with estrogen to prevent endometrial hyperplasia and are sometimes used alone for hot fl ushes, but are less effective than estrogen for this purpose. Data are confl icting regarding the role of androgens for improving libido and well-being. The synthetic steroid tibolone is widely used in Europe and Australasia and effectively treats hot fl ushes and vaginal dryness. Tibolone may improve libido more effectively than estrogen containing HT in some women. We summarize the data from studies addressing the effi cacy, benefi ts, and risks of androgens, progestins and tibolone in the treatment of menopausal symptoms.
