Testosterone Assays: Guidelines for the Provision of a Clinical Biochemistry Service

Abstract: Approximately one year after the devolution of testosterone assays from the SAS, the Analytical Methods Working Party of the Association of Clinical Biochemists set up a working party to investigate the performance of the assays, to survey the available methodology and to give guidance on the factors that influence the assay. This document represents a summary of the deliberations of the group and forms one of a series of similar reports.

“…Laboratory analysis for plasma glucose were all carried out through the glucose oxidase enzymatic method with same brands of laboratory reagents purchased from Randox Laboratory manufacturers, United Kingdom, while serum TT was analyzed via competitive enzyme immunoassay method with reagents sourced from Monoblind Incorporated, United States. 12,13 To maintain and monitor analytical precision and accuracy, three levels of commercial control sera, sourced from the same reagent manufacturers, were interspersed in each run of the laboratory analysis.…”

“…The assays were performed on the RANDOX (Randox Laboratories Limited, UK) using standard kit reference methods. Total testosterone, LH & FSH were estimated on the Advia Centaur'CP immunoassay system by chemiluminescence method [6,7] . TSH was quantitated by immunoradiometric assay by IRMA kit (IRMAK -9) [8] .…”
