TEStool: an environment for visual interactive modeling of autocorrelated traffic

Abstract: A numbex of services, slated to be supported by emerging highspeed communication networks, are expected to give rise to bursty (autocarrelated) traffic streams. A typical example is VBR (variable bit rate) compressed video. This paper describes a software environment, called TEStool, for modeling autocorrelated traffic processes using a class of models called TES (Transjiorm-Expand-Srnple). TEStool supports a heuristic search approach for fitting a TES model to empirical traffic observations. TEStool's visual i… Show more

“…TEStool is a visual interactive software environment designed for fitting TES models to empirical data [7,27,9]. It provides services to construct and modify TES models in the heuristic search mode, to generate simulated sample paths and to examine their statistics, as well as to launch algorithmic searches.…”

“…Consequently, TES modeling of empirical data may be carried out interactively and visually. This observation motivated the design and implementation of a TES-based modeling package, called TEStool, which makes heavy use of visualization in order to provide a pleasant interactive environment for modeling dependent stationary time series [7,9]. Two search approaches have been implemented: heuristic and algorithmic.…”

“…In addition, a big advantage of TES processes is that autocorrelation functions can be calculated using a mathematical formula which makes the modeling phase faster. TEStool [9] is a graphical user interface that allows modeling stationary sequences using the TES methodology.…”

“…The last step results in a distorted background sequence which is then inverted to a foreground sequence using the inverse of the histogram distribution which always guarantees the matching of the marginals. The task of finding an appropriate innovation density that approximates the empirical autocorrelation is carried out via a heuristic search using TEStool [9].…”
