Testing various polarized parton distributions at RHIC

Abstract: A very promising spin physics programme will be soon on the way at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). By studying the spin asymmetries for various processes (single photon, single-jet and $W^{\pm}$ production), we will compare the different predictions obtained using some sets of polarized parton distributions, available in the recent literature. We will put some emphasize on the analysis of the anticipated errors, given the event rates expected from this high luminosity new machine and the curren… Show more

“…The RHIC spin programme is expected to start operation three years from now and will offer new information on the polarized parton distributions from a variety of observables accessible in hadron-hadron collisions [4]. A recent overview of the physics prospects of the RHIC spin programme has been presented in [5], where estimates of the expected asymmetries and anticipated errors for the most important processes can be found. At RHIC it will be possible to access the polarized quark distributions from the study of double and single spin asymmetries in the production of V = W ± , Z 0 vector bosons.…”

“…2. These cross sections are partly more sensitive to the flavor structure of the light sea, although at far larger scales µ F ∼ M W ± ,Z 0 , and may discern its polarized flavor 7 structure not only in doubly polarized collisions but also in the single polarization mode [25]- [27] where only one beam is polarized. Possible benefits of this latter mode are the expected lower statistical errors…”
