Testing the models? New data and commentary on Stanhope & Cohen (1993)

Abstract: Burton & Bruce (1992) proposed an extension of the interactive activation model of face recognition (Burton, Bruce & Johnston, 1990), in which the difficulty of retrieving proper names was explained without requiring an extra stage specific to proper name retrieval as suggested in the model of Bruce & Young (1986). Recently, Stanhope & Cohen (1993) have published data which it is claimed cast doubt upon both the Burton & Bruce (1992) and the Bruce & Young (1986) models of name retrieval… Show more

“…The ubiquitous nature of name learning difficulty has been the subject of considerable interest within the context of current models of face processing ability (Bruce et al, 1994;Burton & Bruce, 1992;Cohen, 1990;Stanhope & Cohen, 1993). In the present study, recall of city names was intermediate between occupation and name recall for all three groups.…”

“…In other words, the same representation may be used to recognize faces and to form mental images of them. If so, it may be possible to start to simulate the above results in an IAC model by using the facial feature recognition pools proposed by Burton (1994). Conversely, it could be that there are output representations of every face that we know that are separate from those that are used for face recognition.…”

“…In such cases, episodic information might be said to be acting as an alternative to a PIN and it appears unlikely that the participant was relying on the person recognition system at all (cf. Bruce, Burton & Walker, 1994). On other occasions, where the extrinsic information was semantic in nature, participants used either visually derived semantics or else the resemblance of the face to a known person (with a known occupation) to construct their own PIN.…”
