Testing the Mechanical Properties of High-Strength Zinc-Coated Bolts: FEM Approach

Abstract: High-strength zinc-coated bolts are used as fasteners in prestressed multi-bolted connections. This communication deals with modelling such bolts using the finite element method. The analyses were performed for a zinc-coated M12 HV10.9 bolt. Coatings with the following thicknesses were considered: 40, 60, 84 and 92 µm. The influence of coating thickness on the selected mechanical properties of the bolt was investigated. The corresponding properties of an uncoated bolt were taken as a reference. It is shown tha… Show more

“…Different base metals and operating temperatures are typically in different job locations. The experimental data gained in this study from the temperature range serves as a significant reference for future applications when quick corrosion status diagnosis for unknown materials on-site is necessary, for example using FEM [46,47]. By comparing the collected velocity and decibel change data to the reference values, it is possible to quickly analyse the material's condition.…”

“…It can acquire a more thorough understanding of the ultrasonic attenuation phenomenon by investigating thicker base metals and their behaviour under high-temperature settings. This knowledge would help to build more precise and dependable inspection strategies, allowing for effective corrosion mapping in various petrochemical plant equipment [50].…”

“…The advantage of this method is that when a rapid corrosion state diagnosis of an unknown material is required in the field, the machine can be set up quickly by examining the composition of the material and applying calculations to obtain a value for velocity. The data from this experiment can also be used for future applications, e.g., using finite element analysis [ 15 , 45 ].…”
