Testing the Limits of Precise Subgiant Characterization with APOGEE and Gaia: Opening a Window to Unprecedented Astrophysical Studies

Abstract: Given their location on the Hertzsprung-Russell (H-R) diagram, thoroughly characterized subgiant stars can place stringent constraints on a wide range of astrophysical problems. Accordingly, they are prime asteroseismic targets for the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission. In this work, we infer stellar properties for a sample of 347 subgiants located in the TESS Continuous Viewing Zones, which we select based on their likelihood of showing asteroseismic oscillations. We investigate how well th… Show more

“…Masses from FLAME compare well with asteroseismic estimates for dwarfs and subgiants (using Serenelli et al 2017;Godoy-Rivera et al 2021), but strong outliers are seen for giants (using Yu et al 2018). Comparison with the GUMS model confirms the presence of a high-mass tail in the FLAME data that is not predicted by the model.…”

“…The ATL was constructed prior to the launch of TESS to provide a prioritised list of targets most likely to yield detections of solar-like oscillations (Schofield et al 2019; see also Fausnaugh et al 2021;Godoy-Rivera et al 2021). Aimed at 120-second cadence data, the list was restricted to stars which would oscillate above the 30-minute FFI Nyquist frequency.…”

“…By combining these parameters with parallaxes, one can estimate stellar radius and luminosity. Recent examples of such implementation include studies dedicated to determining stellar parameters for Hipparcos and Tycho stars (McDonald et al 2012(McDonald et al , 2017, and for subgiants in the TESS southern CVZ (Godoy-Rivera et al 2021).…”

“…It is worth noting that SED fitting does not depend independently on effective temperature (T eff ) and extinction; we refer to such variables as degenerate variables (e.g., Bailer-Jones 2011; Andrae et al 2018). The studies mentioned above either assume zero extinction (Mc-Donald et al 2012 or use a typical extinction estimate for the entire sample (Godoy-Rivera et al 2021). These assumptions are legitimate for particular stellar samples, e.g.…”
