Testing the hadronuclear origin of PeV neutrinos observed with IceCube

Abstract: We consider implications of the IceCube signal for hadronuclear (pp) scenarios of neutrino sources such as galaxy clusters/groups and star-forming galaxies. Since the observed neutrino flux is comparable to the diffuse -ray background flux obtained by Fermi, we place new, strong upper limits on the source spectral index, À & 2:1-2:2. In addition, the new IceCube data imply that these sources contribute at least 30%-40% of the diffuse -ray background in the 100 GeV range and even $100% for softer spectra. Our r… Show more

“…As discussed by various authors (e.g. [87][88][89]), sources which could reproduce the flux of the extragalactic diffuse PeV neutrinos detected with IceCube [90] are at risk of violating the diffuse 1-800 GeV γ-ray background seen by Fermi. Thus, since in our case the neutrino flux is well below the IceCube limits, also the related diffuse GeV γ-ray background is expected to be well below the Fermi limits.…”

“…4 indicates the the optimistic upper limit can exceed the IceCube data in principle. The spectral shape is suggestive as it is globally soft for 10 TeV E ν 5 PeV, but avoids the constraints set by the Fermi extragalactic gamma-ray background measurement in the sub-TeV range [93][94][95].…”

“…Sec. 3.2) has attracted considerable interest [65][66][67][68][69][70] to searches for a diffuse photon flux at PeV energies. Experimental constraints on the diffuse flux of sub-PeV to sub-EeV photons are presented in Fig.…”
