A new approach is considered to detect the water leaks in inert plasma-forming gas present in the reactor chamber. It is made up of the intensity ratio of D α and H α spectral lines in combination with O, Ar and Xe lines intensity. The concentrations of H 2 O, O, H and D particles have been measured with high sensitivity. At the D 2 admixture pressure p D2 = 0.025 mbar, we used the acquisition time of 10 s to measure the rate of water molecules injected from the outside, Γ 0 = 1.4 • 10 −9 mbar • m 3 • s −1 , and the incoming water molecules to plasma, Γ = 5 •10 −11 mbar • m 3 • s −1 . The scaling proves that at small D 2 admixtures (10 −4 mbar), the leaks with the rates Γ 0 ≈ 6 • 10 −12 mbar • m 3 • s −1 and Γ ≈ 2 • 10 −13 mbar • m 3 • s −1 can be detected and measured. The difference between Γ 0 and Γ values is due to the high degree of H 2 O dissociation, which can be up to 97-98%.

The state-of-art of studies of processes involving small fractions of particles formed as a result of chemical transformations of the source gas or appearing from the outside as an impurity is discussed. Various high-sensitivity methods for measuring the low concentrations of particles are considered. The main focus is on spectral methods, both classical and laser ones. The main modern fields of the application of non-equilibrium plasma, features, and achievements of the diagnostic tools used in them are highlighted. The emphasis is on spectroscopic studies of plasma purity in the low-temperature near-wall layers of thermonuclear reactors. In this case, the issue of the penetration of water molecules into the plasma chamber from the cooling circuits is of particular importance. In view of the limited accessibility to the reactors, new remote versions of spectral emission methods are being developed that are focused on the diagnostics of the ITER near-wall plasma. A new method of multispectral optical actinometry is discussed, in which intermediate chemically unstable particles can play the role of actinometers. This broadens the range of possibilities for quantitative measurements of concentrations of particles of different kinds, and increases the sensitivity. Effective actinometric pairs were found for the objects under consideration, e.g., hydrogen and deuterium atoms. The schemes are worked out on laboratory facilities, and kinetic models of plasma-chemical processes are developed. Scaling of the results of model experiments makes it possible to predict the measurement of the impurity flows at the level (10–9–10–13) Pa m3 s–1 with the localization of sources determined by the spatial resolution of the optical system.

A setup for investigation of thermal desorption spectra of gases accumulated in thin films deposited by plasma sputtering of solid targets is described. Deposition and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) are performed in two different vacuum chambers separated by a gate valve with the sample transferred between the chambers in-vacuo. The temperature of the substrate for deposited films can be varied in the range of 300-800 K; and the deposition rate is controlled by a quartz microbalance. Thermal desorption of co-deposited gases is analyzed by a quadrupole mass spectrometer. Sputtering rate and evaporation of the film during TDS are measured by quartz microbalances. Three experiments are described 1) trapping of deuterium by the growing chemically active Li film with subsequent decomposition and evaporation of the film, 2) temperature dependent deuterium trapping in the growing W film resulting in trapping with several binding energies, and 3) chemical interaction of D-Li layer with water vapor leading to isotopic H-D exchange and chemical transformation of the deposited film.
