Testing for Sex Differences in the Nomological Network of the Triarchic Model of Psychopathy in Incarcerated Individuals

Abstract: The triarchic model of psychopathy conceptualizes variants of this clinical condition as expressions of three distinct biobehavioral dispositions, termed boldness, meanness, and disinhibition. As a trait-oriented model, the triarchic model situates psychopathy within a broader nomological network of personality and psychopathology, and has proven useful for characterizing how psychopathy relates to variables in these domains as well as to biological and behavioral variables. The current study was the first to … Show more

“…Supplemental TableAshows associations between informant-rated triarchic traits and criterion variables for male and female prisoner subgroups; it can be seen that associations were similar in most cases. This accords with the finding of similar relations for self-report (TriPM) trait scores with study criteria across these subgroups, as reported bySica et al (2021).…”

“…Future studies of this kind should explicitly assess how the extent of contact between prisoners and informant prison staff affects agreement across report modalities. Along similar lines, detailed demographic data were not available for the prisoners, preventing a more comprehensive look at potential moderators of the relationships observed in this study (apart from biological sex, as examined by Sica et al, 2021).…”

“…Although the model fit and factor loadings were comparable when excluding versus including female participants, future studies of this kind should seek to include adequately balanced samples that can be appropriately evaluated for measurement invariance across sex. Pertinent to this point, Sica et al (2021) reported that high disinhibition in female offenders, compared to male offenders, was more strongly associated with substance use problems, self-harm frequency and versatility, and poorer ratings of behavior in prison. In light of these findings, it will be important to formally evaluate whether disinhibition (along with boldness and meanness) exhibits structural equivalency across female and male offenders.…”

“…As a secondary analysis, we also wanted to clarify the role of gender in moderating the relationship between psychopathy and IPV. For instance, whereas Fanti and Colleagues (2016) found no significant sex differences in the associations between triarchic traits and antisocial conduct in a community sample, another research on prisoners showed stronger associations for the disinhibition trait with substance use problems, self-harm, and staff ratings of prison misbehavior among females compared to males (Sica et al, 2021; see also Verona & Vitale, 2018). Hence, the role of such traits in IPV according to gender needs to be further explored.…”
