Testing Field for PEM, Alkaline and Solid Oxide Electrolysis Technology

Abstract: To test commercially available water electrolysis systems under dynamic (close‐to‐real) operation a test area with three different electrolyzers is build up, covering the significant technologies alkaline water electrolysis, proton exchange membrane water electrolysis, and high temperature steam electrolysis using solid oxide electrolysis cells. The hydrogen outputs of the systems are in the range between 5 to 10 Nm3 h−1 hydrogen at delivery pressures between 10 and 35 bar. Additional balance of plant is insta… Show more

“…For the environmental balance it is important to use electricity from renewable sources to eliminate the carbon footprint of the H 2 . The R&D work in the area of water electrolysis in the context of the Carbon2Chem project includes mainly the analysis of the plant behavior under dynamical operation [6,7]. For the exact examination, it is necessary to analyze in detail the variants and fluctuations of supplied renewable energies.…”

“…the carbon footprint but also on availability, investment costs, specific energy demand, production costs and on which can be operated well under dynamic conditions using intermittent renewable energies. Within the framework of the Carbon2Chem L1 subproject ''dynamic water electrolysis'', three commercially available water electrolysis systems with a capacity of 35-70 kW, namely AEL, PEM and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) as well as a 2-MW AEL pilot plant (thyssenkrupp), were tested in Duisburg under dynamic operating conditions [12]. Based on these results, the different technologies were to be assessed, inter alia, with regard to the specific energy demand and dynamic operation.…”
