Robert Perloff's contributions to and love of psychology are exceeded only by the gift of his extensive knowledge, literary skills, keen wit, and insistence on social justice. He is honored for all of that, for his indomitable spirit and kindness, and for launching his career in quantitative and measurement psychology, including his pioneering work in consumer psychology and program evaluation. A writer for years of an APA Monitor column called "Standard Deviations," Perloff has championed the rights and dignity of women, minorities, homosexuals, and the poor, handicapped, and elderly. Listening, like Thoreau, to a 'different drummer,' he always strikes the mellifluous chord for a caring society, for justice, and for seeking to inject a modicum of comfort into the lives of people suffering hardships, illness, and personal tragedy."
