Testing a typology of batterers.

Abstract: A. Holtzworth-Munroe and G. L. Stuart (1994) proposed a tripartite typology of men who batter their female partners based on the severity of violence, extent of violence, and personality disorder characteristics. The current study attempts to empirically validate this typology using data from 75 domestically violent (DV) men and their partners, and 32 maritally distressed, nonviolent (DNV) comparison couples. Mixture analysis results generally supported the model, although 2 types were not distinguishable on p… Show more

“…In a later empirical test of this hypothesized typology (using cluster analysis of measures of husband violence toward a partner, general violence, antisociality, and fear of abandonment), four clusters were identified, including the three hypothesized groups and an additional low-level antisocial group who fell between the family only and generally violent and antisocial group . Several studies have generally found support for the three group batterer typology (Hamberger, Lohr, Bonge, & Tolin, 1996;Langhinrichsen-Rohling, Huss, & Ramsey, 2000;Tweed & Dutton, 1998;Waltz, Babcock, Jacobson, & Gottman, 2000), although the number and characteristics of all the subgroups are still debatable . Holtzworth-Munroe at al.…”

“…Empirical support for the typology has been successfully gathered across many studies over the years (Chase, O'Leary & Heyman, 2001;Gottman et al, 1995;Tweed & Dutton 1998;Hamberger, Lohr, Bonge & Tolin, 1996;Waltz, Babcock, Jacobson & Gottman, 2000;White & Gondolf, 2000). Of particular interest, Holtzworth-Munroe, Meehan, Herron, Rehman & Stuart (2000) found support using a community sample of 102 men who had been violent toward their intimate partner during the previous 12 months.…”
