Testicular structure of three species of neotropical freshwater pimelodids (Pisces, Pimelodidae)

Abstract: The testes structure of the following Siluriformes was studied: Pimelodus maculatus (Lacepède, 1803), Iheringichtys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) and Conorhynchos conirostris (Valenciennes, 1840). The testes of these species were dissected into cranial and caudal regions. The fringes of mature testes were counted and measured. Student's t-test was used to identify significant differences between fringe lengths of the two regions. To study the whole testes of each species in its resting and mature stage, testes were … Show more

“…The testicular morphology of O. argenteus was similar to the one described for the majority of the teleosts (Andrade, 1980;Ferrari, 1981;Bazzoli, 1985;Silva, 1987;Andrade, 1990;Cruz and Santos, 2004;Hojo et al, 2004, with no accessory organs as occurs in other fish species (Chacon and Mendes-Filho, 1972;Van den Hurk et al, 1987;Patzner, 1989;Lahnsteiner et al, 1993;Lau and Sadovy, 2001). Grier et al (1980) described two testicular patterns based on the spermatogonia distribution along the seminiferous tubules.…”

“…Para as primeiras lâminas da espécie em estudo, convém fixar e identificar a porção proximal, mediana e distal da gônada para verificar se a estrutura é homogênea nas três porções. Esse cuidado é necessário principalmente com testículos, pois em inseminadores e em bagres Pimelodidae, há distinção entre as regiões espermatogênica e secretora (Cruz & Santos 2004, Javonillo et al 2009. Chegando à conclusão de que não há diferenças, opta-se pela porção mediana nas amostras posteriores.…”

“…It is a gonochoristic species with direct development (Basile-Martins et al, 1975) and presents multiple spawning (i.e., asynchronous oocyte development with two or more lots of vitellogenic follicles and oocytes released in batches; Rizzo and Bazzoli, 2020) and no parental care (Agostinho et al, 2003). In males, the testes present lobes with testicular fringes (Cruz and Santos, 2004).…”
