Testicular Metastasis in a Case of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lung

Abstract: Testicular metastases are a rare finding. Typically, a testicular metastasis will present as a complication of progressive disease or as a primary sign of malignancy. Excluding lymphoma and leukemia, prostate cancer is the most common primary site that metastasizes to the testes. Testicular metastases resulting from squamous cell carcinoma of the lung have rarely been reported in previous literature. Here, we report a case of stage IV squamous cell carcinoma of the lung with metastases to the brain and multipl… Show more

“…Testicular neoplasms account for only 1% of all malignancies, and the majority of testicular neoplasms are primary tumors. 8 There are no specific characteristics of metastatic testicular tumors on imaging data. Metastatic tumors usually present as solitary, unilateral nodules and may mimic primary neoplasms of the testis.…”

“…11 Various metastatic routes, including direct invasion, retrograde venous embolism, arterial embolization, retrograde lymphatic extension from para-aortic lymph nodes, transperitoneal seeding and retrograde extension from the vas deferens, have been described as leading to the development of testicular metastasis. 8 The most common mechanism of tumor spread in urothelial carcinoma (UC) is the lymphovascular system. 1 However, the molecular mechanisms of the blood-testis and blood-epididymis barriers for preventing metastatic spread to the testis and how metastases overcome these protective mechanisms remain unclear.…”

“…These functions may make invasion and proliferation of metastatic tumor cells difficult. Furthermore, there are two case reports of testicular metastasis of SCC from the lung [8, 9]. Hence, it is important to determine whether the tumor is a primary tumor and other neoplasms should be excluded.…”

“…Both adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the lung have been reported metastatic to the testis. [24][25][26][27] On gross examination, the tumors are usually solitary gray-tan intraparenchymal masses. On microscopic examination, adenocarcinoma involves the intertubular spaces of the testis, with papillary, micropapillary, acinar, mucinous or poorly differentiated patterns.…”
