Test Review: Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Self-Report version

Abstract: The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Self-Report version (BRIEF-SR) is the first self-report measure of executive functioning for adolescents. With the Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act authorization, there is a greater need for appropriate assessment of severely impaired children. Recent studies have demonstrated the importance of executive functioning as a component of a complete evaluation (D'Amato, Fletcher-Janzen, & Reynolds, 2005). The BRIEF-SR aids in the diagnosis a… Show more

“…The instrument has evidence of content, convergence, and divergent validity (Walker & D'Amato, 2006). Through factor analysis, a behavioral factor (the Behavioral Regulation Index or BRI) and a cognitive factor (the Metacognition Index or MI) are used on the BRIEF.…”

“…The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Self-Report Version [BRIEF-SR; 42,43] is an 80-item self-report executive functioning rating scale. The items reference cognitive (e.g., “I forget instructions easily;” “I have a short attention span”), behavioral (i.e., “I have trouble sitting still;” “I talk at the wrong time”) and mood (i.e.…”

“…For the BRIEF-SR, high internal consistency has been shown for the 80-item GEC (.96), and test-retest reliability is supported by correlations among clinical scales ranging from .59 to .85. Higher correlations were observed for the index scores BRI and MI (.84 and .87 respectively), with the highest correlation (.89) emerging for the GEC [ 49 ]. Convergent evidence of validity is further supported by moderate correlations (for GEC, r = .56) between BRIEF-SR and BRIEF-PF.…”
