PurposeNew perspectives on rehabilitation options for inner ear malformations have still been studied in the literature. This study investigated the cognitive, language, and motor skills of auditory brainstem implant (ABI) users in unimodal and bimodal groups.MethodsThe motor competency of the participants was assessed with Bruininks–Oseretsky Motor Proficiency Test‐2 Short Form (BOT2 SF). Language performance was evaluated by the test of Early Language Development‐3 and Speech Intelligibility Rating. Word identification, sentence recognition tests, and Categories of Auditory Performance were used to assess auditory perception skills. To examine the cognitive performance, Cancellation Test and Gesell Copy Form were administered. All the tests were conducted in a quiet environment without any distractions.ResultsThe participants were divided into two groups: (1) 17 children in the unimodal group and (2) 11 children in the bimodal (who used a cochlear implant on one side and ABI on the other side) group. There were significant correlations between the chronological age of participants and BOT2 SF total score, cancellation tests, auditory perception tests, and language performance. Similarly, there were significant correlations between the duration of ABI use and auditory perception tests, language performance, cancellation test, and some BOT2 SF subtests (r = −0.47 to −0.60, p < .001). There was no significant difference between the unimodal and bimodal groups in any task (p > .05). However, there were moderate‐to‐strong correlations among the auditory perception tests, cancellation test, language test, and BOT2 SF total score and subtests (r = 0.40 to 0.55, p < .05).ConclusionAlthough there were no significant differences between bimodal and unimodal groups, a holistic approach, which indicates that hearing and balance issues can have broader impacts on a person's physical, emotional, social, and psychological aspects, should be used in the assessment process.Level of EvidenceLevel 4.

IntroductionAcute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) ranks among paediatrics' most common oncological malignancies. Monitoring motor performance levels associated with self-sufficiency in the everyday activities of ALL patients is extremely important during treatment. The motor development of children and adolescents with ALL is most often assessed using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency Second Edition (BOT-2) complete form (CF) with 53 items or the short form (SF) with 14 items. However, there is no evidence in research that BOT-2 CF and SF give comparable results in the population of patients with ALL.ObjectiveThis study aimed to determine the compatibility of motor proficiency levels achieved from BOT-2 SF and BOT-2 CF in ALL survivors.Materials and MethodThe research sample consists of n = 37 participants (18 girls, 19 boys) aged 4–21 years (10.26, ± SD 3.9) after treatment for ALL. All participants passed BOT-2 CF and were at least 6 months and a maximum of 6 years from the last dose of vincristine (VCR). We used ANOVA with repeated measures, considering the sex, intra-class correlation (ICC) for uniformity between BOT-2 SF and BOT-2 CF scores and Receiving Operating Characteristic.ResultsBOT-2 SF and BOT-2 CF assess the same underlying construct, and BOT-2 SF and CF standard scores have good uniformity: ICC = 0.78 for boys and ICC = 0.76 for girls. However, results from ANOVA showed that the participants achieved a significantly lower standard score in SF (45.1 ± 7.9) compared to CF (49.1 ± 9.4) (p < 0.001; Hays ω2 = 0.41). ALL patients performed the worst in Strength and Agility. According to the ROC analysis, BOT-2 SF obtains acceptable sensitivity (72.3%) and high specificity (91.9%) with high accuracy of 86.1%, and the fair value of the Area Under the Curve (AUC) = 0.734 CI95% (0.47–0.88) in comparison to BOT-2 CF.ConclusionsTo reduce the burden on ALL patients and their families, we recommend using BOT-2 SF instead of BOT-2 CF as a useful screening tool. BOT-SF can replicate motor proficiency with as high probability as BOT-2 CF but systematically underestimates motor proficiency.

This study examined the differences between children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and neurotypically developing (NTD) in terms of balance, postural control, and motor skills. It also examined which motor skills are most affected and whether scores on different assessment tests in ASD children are correlated. A cross‐sectional observational study with two research groups was conducted. Timed up and go test (TUG), short form of Bruininks‐Oseretsky test of Motor Proficiency version 2 (SFBOT‐2), and pediatric balance scale (PBS) were used. A total of 100 participants 50 with ASD and 50 with NTD engaged in the research. Statistically significant differences were obtained between control group and ASD group in TUG test and in SFBOT‐2 standard score and total score (p‐value = <0.01). A statistically significant difference (p‐value = <0.01) was seen between ASD group's and control group's PBS scores. Poor correlation was noted between TUG and SFBOT‐2, as well as between PBS and TUG. A moderate correlation was also found between SFBOT‐2 and PBS. Children with ASD present difficulties in motor skills and in static and dynamic balance compared to children with NTD. Differences were observed in the motor skills of strength followed by manual dexterity, running speed and agility, fine motor precision, fine motor integration, and balance. The PBS item that showed the greatest difference between the ASD group and control group was maintaining monopodial support with hands on hips. Finally, poor to moderate correlations were obtained between the different tests with statistically significant differences.
