The CSR External-target Experiment (CEE) will be the first large-scale nuclear physics experiment device at the Cooling Storage Ring (CSR) of the Heavy-Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL) in China. A new T0 detector has been proposed to measure the multiplicity, angular distribution and timing information of charged particles produced in heavy-ion collisions at the target region. Multi-gap resistive plate chamber (MRPC) technology was chosen as part of the construction of the T0 detector, which provides precision event collision times (T0) and collision geometry information. The prototype was tested with hadron and heavy-ion beams to study its performance. By comparing the experimental results with a Monte Carlo simulation, the time resolution of the MRPCs are found to be ∼ 50 ps or better. The timing performance of the T0 detector, including both detector and readout electronics, we found to fulfil the requirements of the CEE.

In this paper the new endcap Time-of-Flight system (ETOF) of BESIII experiment at the IHEP is described. The new detector module is composed of multi-gap resistive plate chamber (MRPC) with the gas mixture 90% Freon+5% SF 6 +5% iso-C 4 H 10 . The whole system including the detectors, the gas system, the high voltage (HV) system, the readout electronics system is described. Finally the installation and commissioning of the whole system is introduced briefly. After the calibration with Bhabha events, the very promising time resolutions of 69 and 60 ps for one-end and two-ends of MRPCs are obtained. The average detection efficiency of two-ends is about 97.5%.

In order to improve the particle identification capability of endcap time-of-flight (ETOF) at Beijing Spectrometer III, it is proposed to upgrade current ETOF detector with multi-gap resistive plate chamber (MRPC) technology aiming at extending ETOF overall time resolution to be 80-100 ps for π 's. The new ETOF system including MRPC detectors, front end electronics, CLOCK module, fast control boards and time-to-digital conversion modules, was built up and underwent 3-month cosmic ray test. The main purposes of the cosmic ray test are examining the construction quality of the system, testing the joint operation of all instruments and guaranteeing the system performance. The results show that MRPC time resolution is better than 80 ps, average efficiency is about 98.5 % and the noise rate of strip is 0.2 Hz/cm 2 at the threshold range for normal operation. These results indicate that the entire ETOF system would work well and satisfy the requirements of upgrade.
